Recent rule changes for competitions
- Following the Sydney Olympics, the sport has switched to using balls
slightly larger than before: from 38mm diameter to now 40mm. Most shops
still stock only the smaller balls.
- From the start of 2002 games are shorter, played to 11 points
instead of to 21 points. If 10 points all is reached, then whoever
thereafter gets 2 points in the lead, wins.
- Further, instead of changing server every 5 points, now the server is
to change every 2 points.
- In Toowoomba, each rubber is usually played to be best of 5 games.
- From the start of 2003, attempts to obscure the ball during service is
not permitted. In a service:
- the ball must be tossed vertically at least 15cm;
- tossed and hit beyond the table edge and above the table level;
- clearly seen by the umpire to be visible at all times to the receiver.
