How do we enter? What are the rules?

To enter the competition, the following rules should be followed. Entries must be received at USQ or Murdoch University by October 17. (Note the new due date.) Note that there is no entry fee or any other fee to enter the competition. In overview, follow these steps:
  1. Find a team
  2. Find a teacher
  3. Choose a project
  4. Run the project and obtain results
  5. Prepare a poster describing the study, results and conclusions
  6. Submit it
  7. Await the judging
  8. And if you win a prize...

1. Find a team

  1. Statistics competition teams must normally be made up of a minimum of two students and a maximum of three students all from the same school.
  2. All students in the team must be officially enrolled Year 8 and 9 students at July 1.
  3. The competition is only promoted in Queensland and Western Australia but entries will be accepted from any school (public or private) in Australia.

2. Find a teacher

  1. Each team needs to be sponsored by a teacher in the same school as the students on July 1.
  2. The sponsoring teacher must take responsibility for certifying that the students have the school's permission to enter the competition, that all team members are properly enrolled students at that school and that the team adheres to the competition rules.
  3. The sponsoring teacher may at their own discretion choose to be an active participant in the team, a mentor or advisor to the team or an interested spectator.

3. Choose a project

  1. Teams may choose a project from the list provided or develop their own projects.
  2. Projects should be achievable within a one month timeframe.
  3. Projects should be appropriate for presentation on a single poster and appropriate for public display.
  4. Projects should conform with the general theme of scientific method and data analysis.
  5. The organisers reserve the right to withhold any posters from public display at their own discretion. Any posters which do not address the theme of the competition or which do not appear appropriate for public display will be withheld.

4. Run the project and obtain results

  1. The team may obtain assistance and advice from resource material or resource people available to them.
  2. The poster should acknowledge any such all sources and assistance with appropriate footnotes and references on their final poster.

5. Prepare a poster describing the study, results and conclusions

  1. The final poster will be no larger than 640mm x 1020mm, single sided.
  2. The final poster should be suitable for hanging and any attachments should not protrude more than 30 mm.
  3. The lettering should be large enough to be legible to an average person from a distance of 2 metres.
  4. The poster should describe the purpose of the study, the methods used, the results obtained and the conclusions drawn.

6. Submit it

  1. If possible, photograph your poster before you submit it -- generally the organisers are unable to return posters to the schools.
  2. Ensure that you have filled out and attached the Entry Form to the back of your poster.
  3. Posters should be mailed or hand delivered to (entrants from outside Queensland and Western Australia choose either address to send their entries to):

7. Await the judging

  1. Posters will be judged by a panel of not less than 3 people. Two will be statisticians and one will be a scientist or engineer at the organisers discretion.
  2. Judging will be in accordance with the criteria listed here.
  3. The judges decision will be final.
