Dr. Jesus A. Lopez is head of the Bioinformatics Interest Group (BIG) and a Senior Lecturer in Bioinformatics at the University of Southern Queensland, Australia. He received his BSc (Hons) in Electronics Engineering from the Simon Bolivar University (Venezuela) in 1997, his Ph.D. in artificial intelligence and machine learning from the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, in 2003 and his postgraduate certificate in education PgCUT from the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, in 2004. In February 2000 he joined the School of Information and Software Engineering at the University of Ulster as a part-time lecturer. At the same institute he took up a position as Research Associate in Bioinformatics in 2003 and subsequently became a Lecturer in Bioinformatics in the same year. He has being associate editor in the Proceedings of the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence and an invited editor for IEEE Transactions in NanoBiosciences. He is also an active member of a European network for knowledge exploration in science and technology (COST 282) and obtained funding from the UK research councils for the generation of SB(R)Net which is a UK based regional network on Systems Biology. His research interests are in systems biology, bioinformatics, artificial intelligence, data mining and knowledge modeling in medicine and theoretical biology. He has published over 30 articles in these areas.
