The data give the number of rodent species (out of six considered) observed in 28 locations in coastal southern California (canyons).
There are 28 observations on 9 variables, plus one identifier.
| Location | An identifier: the location of the habitat |
| Rodents | The number of shrub-inhabiting rodents species (out of the six considered) observed |
| Area | The total area of each canyon (in hectares) |
| Shrub.PC | The percentage shrub cover |
| Shrub.Area | The area of each canyon still retaining native shrub vegetation (in hectares) |
| DistX | The distance to the nearest large (greater than 100 hectares) source canyon (in metres) |
| DistY | The distance to the nearest large canyon fragment of equal or greater size |
| Age | The time elapsed since the fragment was isolated by development (in years) |
| Trap.Nights | The number of trap nights (total numbers of traps set over a series of successive nights) |
| Captures | The number of rodents of interest that were captured |
DistX, DistY and Age are missing for locations 26, 27 and 28. This is intentional, as these sites are used as control plots: they are unfragmented habitats, while the other sites are fragmented habitats.
